Epocast 52 A/B is an epoxy laminating system designed to fabricate and repair graphite composites. This product combines great hot-wet strength and low-temperature vacuum bag curing capability. This two-part material is built for service up to 350°F. Epocast 52 A/B is of low viscosity and offers good wetting. This epoxy laminating system can be cured in 2 hours at 200°F, or in 3 hours at 150°F.
The resin component of the Epocast 52-A/B System is blue in color, and the hardener component is amber. Once the two parts are thoroughly mixed together, the system is completely amber. The resin’s density is 1.20 g/cc, and the hardener is 1.00 g/cc. Once combined, the materials density becomes 1.10 g/cc. At 77°F (25°C) the viscosity of Epocast 52-A/B System’s resin is 14,000 cP, and the viscosity of the hardener is 1,500 cP. At 77°F (25°C) the gel time for 100 gms of this system is 60 minutes. If more data is needed, please see the Huntsman Epocast 52-A/B Technical Data Sheet.
The shelf life of the Epocast 52-A/B Epoxy Laminating System when the components are kept in separate, unopened containers at 77°F (25°C) is 6 months. The components are able to last 12 months if kept in separate, unopened containers at 40°F (5°C.) In order to properly mix the Epocast 52-A/B Epoxy Laminating System, 41 parts by weight of hardener will need to be added to 100 parts by weight of resin. The resin and hardener should be mixed together thoroughly for several minutes. Mixing is complete when the material reaches one uniform color and consistency.
If allowed to gel, it is possible that quantities of Epocast 52 A/B larger than 250 grams will yield excessive exotherm. This will cause the product to decompose as well as produce toxic fumes. It is possible to minimize heat build-up by spreading the material over a shallow tray. This will also extend the system’s gel time. If smaller quantities of Epocast 52 A/B are mixed, less heat buildup will occur. It is best to store these materials in a dry area, sealed in their original separate containers. Storage temperatures should range from 60-100°F (16-38°C). For mixing purposes, the temperature of the materials should remain over 65°F.
